New Year´s Fireworks: Insurance Claims Rocket

Home fireworks prove to be a major cause for rocketing insurance claims after the festive holidays. Stray fireworks, rockets and jumping crackers are most likely to damage buildings, parked vehicles and personal belongings. Although many of the damages are covered by either building and contents coverage or motor hull insurance, extensive safety precautions must be taken when handling pyrotechnics.

Every year the holiday season sees hundreds of fires caused by burning Advent wreaths and Christmas trees. Due to good prevention work by the fire brigade, the Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit (KfV) and the Austrian insurers the number of incidents has been kept relatively low compared to other countries (Germany reports tens of thousands of fires in the same time period). Still, dealing with open fire requires a number of important safety precautions.

Pension provision: Starting early is well worth it!

Contrary to some reports published recently, along the lines that it only makes sense to make pension provision from the age of 40, the VVO makes the position clear:  You can’t start early enough to plan for your old age!

Since the early eighties, the Austrian Insurance Association (VVO) has maintained a consumer information unit. As well as countless information enquiries, the unit also maintains a constant interchange between consumers, entrepreneurs, and insurance companies.  Thousands of people approach the VVO with enquiries every year, as a neutral source of information and centre of excellence in matters associated with insurance.

The results of an industry survey by psychonomics AG, commissioned by the VVO, have made things very clear:  Awareness of the need to make one’s own pension provision has risen, and confidence in the State pension has slumped massively, especially among younger people.

June 19th, 2006 saw the successful conclusion of the collective contract negotiations between the Austrian Insurance Association and the Union of Private Employees, involving the approximately 11.500 employees working in the field services of the national insurance sector.

In September 2005, as part of the implementation of the EU Pension Fund Directive, the Corporate Collective Insurance Scheme (BKV) was introduced in Austria.  Despite repeated demands, a genuine equalisation between the providers of corporate benefits has still not been achieved.  As before, access by civil servants and contract workers in public service to corporate collective insurance is still being refused.
