EU License Plates
If you still carry the old type of Austrian license plates, please note that there is no need to change them as they are still valid; you will automatically be issued with the new plates when you get your next vehicle.
Buying another vehicle
When you buy a new vehicle, you must return the old license plates to the car-registration agency. New EU-type license plates, with a new combination of numbers, will be issued for the newly registered vehicle.
If, in an exceptional case, you wish to keep your existing number sequence, a new plate bearing that same number should be ordered at least three weeks prior to the intended registration of the new vehicle.
Getting new plates for an existing vehicle
It is also possible to obtain new EU license plates for an existing vehicle. All you have to do is order and pay for them, and your vehicle will be issued with EU plates bearing a new number. If you wish to keep your existing license-plate number, you must order the new plates in advance; they are generally issued within six months, at which point the old plates must be returned.
Reserving a license-plate number after deregistration
Former white license plates having been reserved after deregistration can not be again issued when you register a new vehicle. Unless you especially reserve a specific EU license plate number in due time, you will, when registering your next vehicle, be issued with a new combination of numbers on an EU license plate. However, if you order new EU license plates bearing a previously reserved registration number in due time - i.e. within the permitted reservation period - you will be reassigned this same number within six months.
Attention: Merely ordering new EU license plates will not extend the timeframe allowed for reservation of that number; it is also necessary to register the car during that period!
Deposited registration numbers
Old black and old white number plates, which have been deposited for a certain period may be reissued, because registration continues to exist. If you have deposited your old white license plates, you may also apply for and receive new EU license plates bearing your old registration number.
