Passenger's Accident Insurance

Motor vehicle passenger insurance provides insurance cover for passengers in an insured vehicle when it is moving, loading or unloading, or otherwise being used.

By way of such a cover, an insurer will compensate vehicle passengers, irrespective of the fault of the insured party. In the event of an accident, which may or may not be the driver’s fault, passengers shall receive commensurate damages, and need not wait for the sometimes lengthy settling of the question as to who was to blame for the accident.

Due to the fact that a person causing an accident cannot assert third-party liability claims against himself/herself, passengers' accident insurance is extremely important for a driver who would otherwise receive no reparation at all when causing an accident. It is also important protection in those instances in which it proves impossible to determine the party at fault.

Possible Insurance Contracts

It is possible to have specific coverage customized to your own particular needs and requirements. The following options are available:

Death
In the event of death, the sum insured will be paid to a nominated beneficiary. It is import to ensure that the name of the beneficiary appears in the contract, otherwise the payment will be made to the estate of the deceased.

Disability
Passengers' accident insurance can also be extended to cover disability, while the amount of any payout is proportional to the level of the disability incurred. The exact amounts are stated in the policy, while a specialist shall establish the level of disability on the basis of a medical examination.

Disability benefits
With temporary disability insurance, and in the event of a permanent or temporary disablement, the insured party shall receive a predetermined amount for every day that they are unfit - and thus unable - to work. This benefit shall be paid for a maximum of 365 days within two years of the day of the accident.

Accident costs
Unless such expenses are borne by the health and social security system or other institution, the costs of treating the consequences of an accident shall be reimbursed, up to the maximum sum insured, within a two-year period from the day of the accident.

Through the provision of insurance cover in the event of death and/or permanent disability, the insurer accepts the costs of transporting a person back from another European country, up to a specific percentage of the sum insured.

Insurance Cover

Insurance shall cover the entitled driver and the entitled passengers. The following persons are not entitled to any benefits under passengers' accident insurance:

  • Unauthorized vehicle passengers (e.g. the thief of a vehicle) or persons who were conveyed against the will of the registered owner.
  • Persons who suffer an accident - as a consequence of a heart attack, a stroke, or as a result of a defective or diminished mental condition (particularly one induced by alcohol or drugs) - when using the vehicle.

The insurer’s obligation is moderated if a disease or handicap, from which an insured person had already suffered prior to the accident, contributed to the consequences of the accident.
