Attention motorcar drivers: Changes to the green card for travellers to Serbia and Montenegro
Vienna, May 6, 2009
As of 11th July 2009 the old green insurance card loses its validity. The green cards affected are those displaying SCG (Serbia and Montenegro) on the country plaque instead of SRB (Serbia). Motorcar drivers planning to travel to Serbia or Montenegro in summer should certainly check their green cards. Should it prove necessary, your insurer will issue a new and valid green card.
Problems travelling with the “old” green card
Anyone wishing to enter Serbia and Montenegro as from 11th July 2009 might be requested to purchase border insurance cover, due to the lacking validity of the green card. In the event of a police check, entry before the 11th July 2009, and residence there once inside the country, could lead to a fine or problems when leaving the country. You should therefore check your green card in good time, and, if necessary, contact your insurance company.
Travelling safely abroad
The green card is internationally standardized proof of existing third party motorcar insurance. For EEA countries and Switzerland as well as for Croatia, the official number plate is sufficient proof of existing motorcar insurance; however, in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Moldavia, Turkey, Ukraine, Belarus und Russia the green insurance card must at all times be kept in the car. It is available from your insurance company and contains details of your own third party motorcar insurance agreement as well as the addresses of all green card offices. Information is available from these offices, if there are any questions appertaining to insurance after an accident. The Austrian Insurance Association VVO as a green card office, will provide you with information in case of an accident involving a motor vehicle registered in a foreign country.
