Equal Treatment of Men and Women in Health Insurance
In principle, insured persons pay the insurance premium appropriate to their risk. As from 01 December 2007, the risk for the costs of pregnancy, confinement, and maternity must be borne by women AND men. This means that, for new contracts, insurance tariffs which include a service or payment in the event of pregnancy and confinement will divide the corresponding portions of the premium between men and women.
Despite this, the premiums for men and women will continue to be different. The reasons for this lie in the different degree of claims on the other services (this different level of claims is represented in the claims profile below, for age groups in five-year increments), as well as in the higher life expectancy for women (see Austrian mortality tables, published on the Homepage of Statistics Austria).
