Problems after road accidents with foreign vehicles?

Vienna, 21/08/2003
In the event of problems, drivers can contact the Austrian Insurance Association (VVO) – phone: 01/711 56-0.

In the event of an accident occurring in Austria with a vehicle registered abroad it is usually difficult for the innocent party to ascertain the place from which he/she can claim damages. In such instances, VVO ascertains the third-party insurer of the foreign vehicle and identifies the office – an insurance company or a specialized claims adjuster – which will deal with the case in Austria.

As a general rule, European insurers have nominated permanent partners – Green Card representatives – for these claims. These can be found on our website. If no representative exists or the insurer is not known, the driver can use the “rotating service” (the schedule is outlined on VVO’s homepage) to find a claims adjuster for accidents involving cars registered abroad.

After traffic accidents occurring in an EU member state, or in Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway with a vehicle registered in one of these countries, claims for damages can be asserted in Austria. Each vehicle third-party liability insurer must nominate a damage claims adjusting agent in Austria, who will process the claims with the responsible foreign insurance company and settle them out of court.

The foreign insurer and the nominated claims adjuster can also be ascertained from the VVO office located at Schwarzenbergplatz 7, 1030 Vienna.
